The magic of Morandi

The magic of Morandi

Little-known outside his native Bologna, Giorgio Morandi is being exhibited at the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art and is well worth close examination.
‘What you can do with a line…’ I overheard one visitor comment to her friend. That’s quite an understatement. Thanks to his exquisite attention to detail, Morandi’s subjects – bottles, jars and vases – are given a visual importance and value that belie their ordinariness. Simple household subjects seem to reverberate with life, even intrigue. Little wonder that his name is mentioned in the same sentences as Rembrandt and Piero della Francesca.
